Do you know how to prepare Krend through-colour wall render for painting?

Several customers have asked us how to soft wash KRend through-colour render in preparation for painting.

Here's the facts, direct from KRend themselves and from our experience of soft washing since early 2014.

1) KRend through-colour render can be painted but it requires great care at the preparation stage. Worst case scenario is that spores can get trapped under the layer of paint and will breed. And because these spores will be under a layer of paint, treating them with biocide will be impossible.

Quick tip: A high quality masonry paint is essential. KRend's recommended paint supplier is a company called "Rendit". Phone 0130 288 4385. They specialise in render paints and can match KRend colours. These would be the people to recommend to your customer if they want to buy paint.

2) KRend's official guidance on preparation: Surface must be thoroughly cleaned and washed down. All biological growth must be removed and treated with biocide.

So if your customer insists on painting (perhaps they just want a change of colour for reasons of their own) then all algae and other biological growths MUST be killed and the surface treated with Benz Bio Cleanzebefore painting.

Quick tip: The good news for cleaning contractors is that you get a new soft washing customer whether they decide to paint or not paint their Krend wall render.

3) From our experience of running a full-time soft washing business since early 2014 the most effective approach to preparing Krend for painting is:

First clean the KRend render with Benz Lightning Cleanze diluted 5:1, to produce a fast result, applying it with the Benz 10 nozzle.

Then spray the render with Benz Bio Cleanze using the Benz 6.5 spray nozzle. The 10 nozzle can be used but the 6.5 is more efficient when treating a surface with Bio Cleanze.

Rinsing: Lightning Cleanze must be thoroughly rinsed from the treated surface. A power washer fitted with a rinsing nozzle or wide angle fan jet works well. Turn the pressure down so that the jet is only at "hose pipe" pressure at the point of contact with the render.

If you cannot turn the pressure down on your power washer, then at the very least keep the nozzle at least 12-18 inches away from the surface because a high pressure jet can seriously damage Krend render.

Quick tip: If your customer baulks at the price of treating with both Benz Lightning Cleanze and Bio Cleanze, then a soft wash treatment with Lightning Cleanze alone could be offered. We think this would be spoiling the ship for a halfpenny worth of tar – but if that's what the customer wants ... 🤔

We hope this information is helpful and sincerely wish you great success in your soft washing business,

Ben, Leo, Fiona, Stevie & Anthony
