How to maintain artificial grass

Artificial grass is an excellent, popular and low-maintenance alternative to natural turf, but like anything outdoors, it benefits from regular care to keep it looking its best. With the right approach, you can maintain a clean, fresh, and vibrant artificial lawn all year round. Here’s how:

Regular Cleaning & Debris Removal

Leaves, twigs and general debris can accumulate over time, especially in shaded or sheltered areas.

It is advisable to regularly remove these from the artificial grass to minimise the accumulation of organic matter, which can degrade within the matting and create a breeding ground for algae.

A quick once-over with a leaf blower, plastic rake, or stiff brush will keep the surface clear and prevent organic matter from breaking down into the turf.

Lightning Cleanze on Artificial Grass

For deeper cleaning, Lightning Cleanze, applied at our recommended dilution of up to 5:1, has not been known to damage artificial grass. It effectively lifts dirt, kills algae and thoroghly cleans the artificial grass.

However, it’s worth noting that artificial grass accidentally sprayed with Lightning Cleanze may look cleaner than untreated sections – because they are cleaner!

Therefore, as an extra precaution, always pre and post-drench the areas of artificial grass not being cleaned or treated with water, just as you would when treating natural grass. This ensures an even clean and minimises any chance of residual cleaner remaining on the surface.

Heavy Soiling & Restoration
For artificial lawns suffering from heavier or extreme soiling, the most effective method is to use Lightning Cleanze followed by gentle pressure washing. This process delivers rapid, visible results, and because Lightning Cleanze is fully rinsed away, there’s no lingering chemical residue to worry about.

Light Maintenance & Preventative Treatment
If your artificial grass only has light algae or organic colonisation, consider using Bio Cleanze at a 50:1 dilution. This is a simple spray-only treatment that eliminates the algae responsible for discoloration. Over time, natural weathering from sun, wind, and rain will wash away dead algae, gradually brightening and refreshing the lawn.

For long-term cleanliness, periodic Bio Cleanze treatments can help keep your artificial grass looking consistently fresh without the need for aggressive cleaning.

Pet Waste & Hygiene
Artificial lawns are pet-friendly, but regular maintenance is key. Remove solid waste as soon as possible and rinse the affected area with clean water. A light application of Lightning Cleanze at 5-10:1 can help break down organic matter and keep the grass smelling fresh.

Safety Considerations
If animals or children use the lawn, ensure the surface is fully dry before allowing them back on. If children will be playing on the grass, it’s best to wait until heavy rain has rinsed any remaining cleaning solution from the surface, or a give the grass a good rinse with a hose pipe 48 hours after application.

Quick Tip: Don't use paving jointing sand to weigh down artificial grass. It is typically coarser than kiln-dried silica sand and can include polymeric additives that harden when wet to prevent weed growth, which would not be suitable for artificial grass as they could inhibit drainage.

For artificial grass, always use kiln-dried silica sand rather than jointing sand to avoid drainage issues.
