These are the highest quality softwash spray nozzles, specially manufactured for use with Benz Lightning Cleanze and Bio Cleanze.  They are tough, durable, and deliver optimum spraying performance

For Lightning Cleanze application we have two softwash nozzles: the 10 and 15.

The 10 delivers lower flow rates when spray drift is major consideration, e.g. treating high surfaces such as the top sections of gable ends.

The 15 is for use at lower levels, when spray drift is less of a problem, and offers a faster flow rate .

For Bio Cleanze we have the 6.5 softwash nozzle that offers a high velocity spray pattern, which deeply penetrates the substrate.

The importance of reducing spray drift

Minimising spray drift and overspray safeguards the operator, adjacent properties and vehicles, as well as your customer's garden plants, trees and lawns. Using Benz softwash nozzles is one of the best ways to achieve this.

Do you need a European "screw thread" or Gardiner "push fit" nozzle?

European screw thread soft washing nozzle

The European screw thread, pictured left, fits any Water Fed Pole (WFP) with a male European thread.

It has an advantage over the push fit type in that you can adjust the spray angle.

However, it is slightly heavier, which means it is not quite as easy to control when the pole is fully extended.

gardiner pole systems soft wash nozzle

The Gardiner 'push fit' type nozzle, pictured left, simply connects to a standard 8mm OD (Outside Diameter) pole hose.

This then pushes into the top section of a Gardiner WFP, as you can see in the picture.

The angle is fixed at 45 degrees and is lighter than the screw type nozzle. This makes it easier to control when your pole is fully extended.

The push fit nozzles are designed for the Gardiner water fed pole with a 19mm diameter. They fit the CLX and SLX range of Gardiner water fed poles.

These poles were originally intended for professional window cleaning but we've also found them to be an excellent choice for softwashing.

Quick tip: We've found some cheaper nozzles, clamps, and connectors on the market that appear to be adapted domestic garden equipment, or simply are of inferior quality. In our experience they break easily and do not perform to professional standards.

After a lot of searching we could not find an existing softwash spray nozzle that did what we wanted while being robust and reliable – so we designed and built our own.

How to choose the correct size of softwash nozzle

Benz softwash spray nozzles deliver a cone-shaped pattern to the surface and are available in three sizes of nozzle tips, 6.5, 10 and 15.

You'll find the size of tip stamped on the face of the nozzle.

The numbers relate to ratings for fluid delivery in litres per minute at 6 Bar (for example the 10 tip is rated at 10L/pm at 6 Bar).

In less technical language the smaller the number on the tip, the smaller the orifice or size of outlet of the nozzle. Benz softwash chemicals perform differently when used with different sizes of orifice.

The 6.5 is great for applying a "quaternary ammonium" (DDAC) based biocide such as Benz Bio Cleanze. Its smaller orifice gives a greater pressure of chemical delivery, helping to more effectively penetrate deep into the biological growth that's responsible for the unsightly staining.

It's suitable for flow rates up to 6L/pm (at the nozzle) without creating excessive spray drift and can be used with small 12v pumps. Higher pressure pumps can be used if they are regulated to around 6L/pm.

The 10 is best suited for the low pressure application of Benz Lightning Cleanze. It offers higher flow rates when using a small pump, such as 100psi 5L/pm pump commonly used for window cleaning, and confines spray drift to a minimum.

The 10 nozzle is suitable for flow rates up to 2 LPM (at the nozzle) without creating excessive spray drift.

It can also be used for Bio Cleanze application up to flow rates of 4L/pm but does not have the same pressure of delivery as the 6.5.

The 15 is best suited for the low pressure application of Benz Lightning Cleanze at higher flow rates. It can be used with the larger softwash pumps such as the Comet or Rolltec.

This nozzle is suitable for flow rates up to 10 LPM (at the nozzle) without creating excessive spray drift.

    Understanding flow rates

By reducing the size of the hole in the nozzle – the orifice – the output pressure and velocity increases – but this restricts the flow of fluid, so the flow rate decreases.

To best understand this, think of squeezing a garden hose at the end. The water will spray further but the flow rate will be reduced. To cover the same distance with same flow would need more energy (i.e. a bigger pump).

The 10 offers higher flow rates than 6.5 using a similar pump because the orifice is bigger but the chemical reacts differently at different flow rates and pressure which is why we choose the 10 over the 6.5 when using Lightning Cleanze with a 100psi 5LPM window cleaning pump.

What flow rate do you need for each softwash nozzle?

Set the flow-rate of your softwash pump so the flow-rates at the nozzle "in use" are:

    Lightning Cleanze: 1-2 L/pm with 10 nozzle or 2-4L/pm with 15 nozzle

    Bio Cleanze: 2-6 L/pm with 6.5 nozzle

The simplest way to determine if the flow rate is correct, is to observe the amount of softwash chemical going onto the surface. If there's too much and you can see a lot of unnecessary run-off, turn the flow-rate down. If there is not enough softwash chemical reaching the surface, turn the flow-rate up. Getting a "feel" for this comes with experience.

For example, for most porous wall renders applying Bio Cleanze at 10Lpm would deliver too much chemical too quickly without allowing it to soak deep into the substrate, and there would be a lot of spray drift. Whereas 10Lpm can be fine for some large flat roofs, car parks, and in general any large horizontal area where fast application is desirable and overspray is not a problem.

If you want to check the flow-rate more precisely, simply direct the jet into a bucket for one minute. Then measure the quantity of chemical in the bucket. For example, if there's 2L in the bucket your flow-rate is 2L/min – and so on. There are too many variables, such as hose diameter, type of pump, pressure, material the surface is made of, etc, to give a one-size-fits all static figure for the best flow rate for a given surface.

Rinsing nozzle: What's the best nozzle to use for rinsing?

We recommend a zero-degree tip rinsing nozzle.

These rinsing nozzles are available from a number of suppliers.

Click here to visit our Softwash Equipment page, then scroll to the foot of the page to find the contact info for our recommended equipment suppliers.

What size hose do you need?

A standard water fed pole hose of is 8mm outside diameter and 5.5mm inside diameter suits our nozzles. We've never had a problem with these hoses when Benz softwash chemicals are used at our recommended dilutions.

Quick tip: The connection near the top of the nozzle is for the chemical to go through. It screws into the water fed pole threaded adapter. The chemical is fed through the water fed pole hose, up the pole, out again though the threaded adapter (as you do for a window cleaning brush) and into the nozzle. It takes an 8mm outside diameter pole hose.
